Make a List and Check It Twice

How many times have you gone to the grocery store or to a superstore to get one or two things and walked out with a full cart? We’ve all been there. We just need shampoo, but somehow we walk out with wrapping paper, discounted Halloween candy, Stars Wars on bluray, and no shampoo.

That’s not great when we’re just shopping for toiletries, but when you’re shopping for food, it can be disastrous for your diet. Sure, you mean to get fresh vegetables and lean protein, but somehow those doughnuts just fell in your basket.

That’s why it’s important to make a grocery list before you go shopping – and then stick to it when you go. Of course, you don’t just make a grocery list blindly. An easy way to get started is to plan your meals for the week (or for at least a few days). Then, take inventory of what you have on hand so you know what to add to your list.

Meal planning can be as simple as you like, or more complex. If you don’t want to make a formal plan, just think of healthy meals that you enjoy eating. Then write down the ingredients you need for those meals. For example, I make a salad that I like so much I could eat it every day. Sometimes I do. So every time I go grocery shopping, I buy the supplies for that salad.

In the same vein, it’s a good idea to keep basic essentials on hand for quick meals. In my case, I always have eggs. Not only do I put them on that salad I love, but making scrambled eggs (for example) is an easy and fast dish.

Once you go shopping, try to stick to your list as much as possible. That doesn’t mean you can’t buy something that’s not on your list. After all, you may forget to add something and remember only once you’re at the store. But try to stick to the list as much as possible. Your wallet and your waistline will thank you.
