The best exercises for the stomach are not necessary exercises that specifically target your abs. That’s right, rather than filling your time on a balance ball, or spending hours doing crunches, consider a much simpler remedy to your bulging belly. Try walking.

This advice is especially true if you are more than just a few pounds overweight because if you’re carrying flab all over your body, just targeting your stomach isn’t going to do you much good. That’s why you would be better off walking.

While walking is not the most intense physical activity you can do, when it comes to flattening your stomach it can be very useful. Of course, to really speed up the process of flattening your abdominal area, consume healthy foods of moderate portions, and drink plenty of water. By combining healthy eating with brisk walks, it will help to flatten your stomach over time.

Researchers evaluated 40 years of studies on exercise and stomach fat and discovered that just 2 1/2 hours of brisk walking a week, approximately 20 minutes a day, can help to reduce your stomach by about 1 inch in about a month.

Walking will help you firm up your entire body which will help you appear thinner and more healthy. By doing cardio exercises and forcing your heartbeat to increase, you will improve your metabolism which will help you digest food faster and more efficiently. So just start with a quick-paced walk three or four times a week. Not only will it help you burn calories, but it is also a sound exercise for your heart.

Remember… in addition to a healthy diet, walking is one of the best stomach exercises you can perform because it elevates your metabolism enough burn away excess calories from your head to toe and because total body fitness is the ultimate trick to a flat stomach, a fast-paced stroll is the first step towards a sleeker more energized you.

And because your stomach muscles help to keep your body upright and stable, they also dictate your posture. That’s why a bulging belly is often the result of poor posture — which is often caused by weak abdominal muscles. Walking, particularly uphill or over challenging terrain, demands that your abs tighten and strengthen, which in turn will improve your posture. And having a straighter, more upright posture will help create a slimmer appearance that friends and family won’t be able to stop complimenting you about.
